Frequently Asked Questions
1
Should my child attend the first session?
It is usually recommended that only parents attend the first session (both for therapy and evaluations). This allows the parents to speak freely about the concerns they have for their child.
2
How should I explain therapy to my child?
For young children, it is recommended to inform them they are attending therapy. Discuss with your child ahead of time the reason for attending therapy, and explain that therapy is an opportunity for them to discuss their thoughts and feelings and learn new ways of coping with things that bother them.
3
How long is each session?
Individual and parenting sessions are typically 45 - 60 minutes in duration. Evaluation sessions vary significantly depending on the type of test being completed. The length of each evaluation session will be discussed before testing begins.
4
What should I expect during and after the first session?
The first session is typically with parents only (depending on the child's age). This session is called an "Intake Session". The goal of this session is to gather detailed information about the presenting concerns for your child as well as detailed information about your child's developmental, medical, and educational history.
After this session, the therapist will share if your child's needs in therapy are a good fit for her approach.
If the fit is not right, you will be provided with a referral for another provider that may be a better fit. If it is determined that your child's needs can be met, you will work with the therapist to schedule a regular therapy time.
After school therapy sessions often fill quickly. If the therapist does not have an opening at a time that your child is available, you will be added to a wait list, and the therapist will reach out to schedule as soon as an opening becomes available.
